Pedro Appleton

Born in Lisbon (1970), he received a M.Arch from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon (1993), and a M.Sc in Building Heritage and Conservation from the Portuguese Institute of Technology (IST). He collaborated in various design practices before joining PROMONTORIO. Pedro also worked in cinema production and amateur theatre and in recent years has been involved in universal design and disabled accessibility. In this capacity, he has lectured and served on various bodies and juries as an expert of the Portuguese Association of Brain Palsy. Within the partnership. Pedro has focused on design sustainability and environmental design strategies, in addition to aquariums, botanical gardens and nature-driven projects, implementing, among others, the internationally acclaimed Mora River Aquarium. As part of his interest, he has also worked and researched extensively on education facilities and on implementing pedagogical strategies through design.

João Luís Ferreira

Born in Lisbon (1963), he received a M.Arch from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon (1988). Shortly after graduation, he became involved in philosophy and since then published multiple essays and texts, having collaborated in critical journals such as Leonardo (1987-89) or Barbara (1997), in latter acting as editor-in-chief. Between 2007 and 2012, he served as a member of the editorial board of Babel publishers and has been a participant in various critical think-tanks. In 2009, he served as president of the jury of Arquitectar (Architectural Sustainability Award), and in 2014, as president of the jury of the Portuguese architecture award (Secil U). Within the partnership, in addition to managing the head office, João Luís has been involved in large-scale and highly complex mixed-use urban projects. In 2011, together with a vast multidisciplinary team, he spearheaded the governmental city master plan of the south expansion of Maputo, capital of Mozambique, which is now successfully under phased implementation.

Paulo Martins Barata

Born in Lisbon (1965), he received a M.Arch from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon (1988), a MBA from the University of Edinburgh (1991), Ph.D from ETH in Zürich (2000), and was Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Columbia University, in New York. He published extensively on architectural theory and criticism in leading magazines and was a member of the editorial board of Daidalos (Berlin). He was visiting faculty at the University Minnesota and visiting critic at the University Texas at Austin and Northeastern University. He served as president and member of various juries including the national awards of Portugal (Secil U) and Bulgaria. He curated the Prototypo Seminar in Architecture (Porto 2001) and the International Seminar of the 1st Lisbon Architecture Triennale (2007). Between 2005 and 2010, served as member of the board of the Portuguese Order of Architects. In Graz, in 2003, he was appointed a member of the European Cultural Parliament, in which he served until 2011. In recent years, Paulo has been interested in the tourism and leisure industry and has worked extensively both in hotel and resort design, as well as writing and lecturing on the subject.

Born in Lisbon (1964), he received a M.Arch from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon (1988). Between 1987 and 1990, he worked in the property division of Sonae Sierra, involved in the search of investment opportunities and assisting the management team in setting up feasibility studies for major acquisitions. Since then, Paulo has focused on retail design and has been involved in numerous large-scale projects. In this capacity, he has truly become a leading authority in the field. As an expert in retail design, he has lectured extensively worldwide at universities, corporations and professional institutes, advising major clients and investors in the development of evolving retail design concepts. In the past decade, he has been based in Qatar and working extensively in the Middle East, namely in Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, in addition to India, Pakistan, Russia, Malaysia and Vietnam.

João Perloiro

Born in Lisbon (1962), he received a M.Arch from the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Lisbon in 1987. Between 1983 and 1989, he worked in the architecture practice of the late João Bento d’Almeida, first as an apprentice, and later as project director mostly dedicated to cultural projects, such as museum renovations and exhibitions. Within the partnership, João heads the Interior Design division, working tightly with the architecture teams to ensure a comprehensive and interconnected design across-the-board. In an effort to develop an increasingly holistic vision, João has cultivated an in-house product design practice, having multiple pieces of furniture and objects fabricated and customized for specific projects. In recent years, he has also been actively involved in charity projects for various humanitarian and charitable institutions.
